Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Howell!!

On behalf of all the staff, we would like to Congratulate Shelley and her husband Phil, on their recent nuptials.  The day was lovely and as ever the bride looked beautiful.  Please join us in wishing her all the best for the future.

FLYSTRIKE

Fly strike is especially common during the summer. Rabbits that suffer from "dirty bottoms" are at high risk of fly strike.  Flystrike is a potentially fatal condition which occurs when flies lay eggs upon them and the eggs then hatch into maggots. Bluebottle eggs produce maggots that can very rapidly mature and eat into the living flesh within 24 hours. This is often rapidly fatal for the poor rabbit if immediate vet treatment is not sought.

What causes flystrike?

Rabbits suffering from obesity, dental problems, diarrhoea, arthritis and skin wounds, as well as rabbits with long hair are at high risk of flystrike as flies are attracted to rabbits suffering from dirty bottoms. Rabbits living in dirty hutches are also susceptible, as flies like damp and smelly conditions.

Preventing flystrike

  • Remove soiled bedding everyday & disinfect hutches weekly
  • Physical barriers such as adding fly-screens to hutches and runs
  • Check your rabbit at least once a day and make sure there is no evidence of diarrhoea in its hutch or rear end
  • Make sure your rabbit is eating a healthy diet
  • Don't forget that house rabbits are also at risk!
  • Summer bank holiday opening times:  We are closed Monday 31st August
